research and other wanderings - see my website! There are comics and a store and everything: Hark! A Vagrant

Hmm

grunkfield:

i see them around a lot and i just wanted to remind you all that kate beaton comic parodies actually upset her  and she really hates that everyone takes her comics and edits them into other fandoms and stuff, shes talked on her twitter about how its really discouraging and upsetting to her.

it would be really nice to respect her wishes and cool it on the beaton parodies ok?? you can make your own jokes and stuff but editing someone elses comic is kind of rude.

Jeez ok, I’ve been getting this one in the ol’ mailbox today quite a bit.

I don’t care if anyone traces my work.  You can trace my work till the cows come home.  Attribution is what I care about.  If you read my tumblr or my website, you’ll note I take care to link back to where I found the image, I name the artist, I tell you to go there.  Attribution is important for all artists, no matter who they are!  And it’s exciting to share things and show people where to find even more of those things.  Not attributing images, movies, music, etc to artists isn’t against the law or anything, and there’s nothing we can do if you don’t, but I hope people will get in the habit of it for things that they post.  And the people who made those things totally appreciate it.  Everybody ends up winning that way!

A question (nitpicking)(related)(I’m sorry):  Is tracing comics and keeping the jokes and compositions what you would call a “parody?"  I mean if the main things that change are superficial, like hair.  Parody implies an imitation with exaggeration, not just the same thing with names changed.  But I don’t know what I’d call it!  I’ve been thinking about that since the first time it was brought up, but I guess if people want to call it a parody they can because I can’t think of anything better so WHO KNOWS.

But for real: a tracing of my work without attribution is small beans compared to posting someone’s original work without their name.  And maybe you think that a copy is not the same as the original, so it’s a new piece of art that doesn’t need to be linked back to me.  If we disagree, then we disagree, it’s not a big deal.

Anyway, no one needs to feel bad about having fun with comics.  Have fun with comics!  The person who wrote this meant well but I am not "upset” nor do I “hate” anyone.  But I’ll keep promoting attribution in this wild west called the internet, because every time someone’s drawing gets 100 000 views on Funnyjunk or the Chive or whatever and no one has any idea who made it, a kitten sheds a tear.
