research and other wanderings - see my website! There are comics and a store and everything: Hark! A Vagrant

I’ve been watching some of the videos from the treasure trove that is the McCord Museum, and in this one about Fancy Dress balls, a few things:

-No one knew what vikings looked like

-Even in Victorian times people were trying to make Canadians give a shit about their own history

-the “Incroyable” the Adult Babies (“Our Nurse Nannie”), and the “harlequin” with the MASSIVE mutton chops are great

but most of all

-Someone is dressed as “Tennis” and another as “Photography”

You know, I’ve seen the fantastic “The Beatles: Rock Band” cinematic a few years ago from amazingly talented animator Robert Valley, but I’ve never seen this ending clip from the game.  His style is just so darn.. stylish!!

And if you haven’t seen the original piece I mentioned:

Light's House →

In yesterday’s post, I ended the description by saying that your mother ‘loves you,’ a comment that was meant to make people feel good and welcome about identifying with the comic, if they did.  But, we all know that not everyone’s home life has been ideal, and some people took me to task on saying so.  I do not, of course, think that everyone has a healthy or even tolerable relationship with their mothers, and I’m not in the habit of dictating anyone’s feelings to them either.  No offense was meant if it appeared so, and I am sorry if it did.

Mother’s Day to me has been a sincere and cherished memory, but I understand it can be trite and unfair in others’ lives. I guess the best we can do in this old world is to try and be mindful of the feelings and experiences of those around us.  This job of mine is very public, and I’ve learned that lesson many times over as I’ve advanced in it, to my greater (I hope) growth as a creator and friend.

The link here is to Light’s House, an informative site for the children of difficult or toxic parents.  If you do not recognize your own in there, well then, we should all be so fortunate.

Happy Mother’s Day!

I often portray my mom as a timid lady, because she is so loving and sweet.  But she’s tough too, she tried very hard to give us every opportunity in a small place, without much.  My mother is the one who has believed in my abilities the longest, and the fiercest, and for that I owe her everything.

In this particular exchange, she also showed me that people’s talent may not always be what it appears to be to others, and that we all may have a greatness in us that not everyone can see.

Remember to call your mother today.  She loves you.

As if I could not be any more excited for Brave, the gaelic song at the end of the latest trailer has put it over the edge.  "Tha Mo Ghaol Air Aird A’ Chuain", sung by Julie Fowlis.

I’ll leave this other Dionysos video here, it’s the work of Stephane Berla and I like the eeriness.  Right now he is working on a film that sounds pretty great, no?  I hope these links work.

One of my favorite videos, by Dionysos, with animation of Johann Sfar’s drawings!  Get inspired.

Last month I came to know the works of M.R. James and I hope you will also.  So spooky and wonderful, and there are several BBC adaptations, like this, and they are great.

kalidraws:

So, I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan. I was inspired by seeing Kate Beaton’s ASOIAF art yesterday (Ygritte! Beric Dondarrion!), and had a nice discussion about George R.R. Martin’s awesomely varied lady characters. I haven’t drawn any ASOIAF art lately, but I thought I’d collect my previous pieces in a handy bundle right here:

- The disturbingly nondescript Leech Lord, Roose Bolton.

-Brienne of Tarth— powerhouse lady-knight!

-An early morning in King’s Landing with Sansa.

-Jon Snow & Ghost beyond the wall!

(I’ve also drawn a Khal Drogo, but it’s not my favorite, so I’m not including it!)

It’s a bummer that we’ll probably be waiting a while for the rest of the books to come out, but you can bet this isn’t the last batch of ASOIAF art you’ll be seeing from me.

When I was on my book tour I had the pleasure of being on a Portland radio show with the talented folk musician and super nice fellow Tyler Stenson.  He performed this song, and another, Wyoming

Man of A Thousand Voices: I’m watching this documentary on the legendary Mel Blanc.
