“Art”

I wrote to a person whose tumblr I follow, it’s an art blog with lots of interesting things on it, and it’s been written up in quite a few places as inspiring and wonderful!  There were often nudes on it, which is totally fine, but they were only ever nudes of young, slim white ladies.

You know what can be beautiful art?  Any kind of body!  Young, old, any gender, any ethnicity, any size.  It’s tiring to follow art blogs that only see waify nude ladies as good art.  Gimme a break!  More variety please.

Anyway I got no response for writing about it but I did get blocked!  Put what you want on your own blog but you might look pretty narrow to some people.

I was directed to other tumblrs like Male Beauty in Art, which has some lovely stuff on it.  Got to even this out!  Feel free to suggest any you know of.

—–

woop! edit: Just to be clear, it wasn’t an artist I wrote to, it was one of those general blogs that curates content from all over the place.  I didn’t tell them to change their ways, I asked why the body types chosen were all so similar. And they had a right to block me if they wanted to!  It’s their space.

This is a film I know well, we used to play it at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, where I worked.

Around Cape Horn doesn’t look like much at first, no flash, but it’s all substance I guarantee you.  Listen as Captain Irving Johnson takes you by the hand and shows you everything you’re seeing the way he remembers it, when he took this footage in 1929.  Beyond the age of sail, but thankfully for us, into the moving picture age.

You can purchase the video, of course.  It was made by the capable people at Mystic Seaport, this is their store.  Mystic Seaport is the largest maritime museum in North America, and I got to visit it last year.  Delightful!

Wow! A couple of things!

First, is is going to take a shit in that lamp(?) - inquiring minds want to know!  We’re not getting a view of his ass for nothing, I suppose!  The detail of excess on that one figure is totally amazing.  Bloody daggers behind his back!  It’s funny but it is also the worst likeness of Robespierre I’ve ever seen, back to portraiture school for you.

Next - the guillotine is far away and so to hammer the point home they’ve drawn a crown on the blade, so we know for sure it’s the king.  Like a bad modern political cartoon almost!  IT IS THE KING YOU SEE

They must have to throw away the Crown Guillotine when they’re done with Louis, you can’t just use it on any old Girondist, what a faux-pas.

I think someone is burning the bacon in that church behind you guys

I like the conversation people are having about this striking image, but yowzers, that user @Lammont (is that how you do it on tumblr?) was totally ripping into Kate Beaton for no reason. And swearing aggressively at her. Beaton asked some questions and poked fun at political cartoons - she did not attack the image in the way she was painted as having done. Lammont had some interesting things to say, and it’s a shame those comments were presented so rudely.

I sure hope I misunderstood that whole thing and none of that was how it really was (and if that’s true I GLADLY apologize).

haha aw no, it’s just the tumblr jumble!  I was cracking jokes off the cuff about the picture because it’s totally amazing and it cracked me up when I was going through what gunsandposes had posted.  I know the guy has no pants because he’s a sans-culotte and I sure don’t actually think he’s supposed to be the immaculately dressed Robespierre.  A fan of Gillray as you can see here!  If you wanted to, you can find out all the facts about this illustration lickety split because, google.

But hey, if it ain’t clear that I’m kidding and I need to write better jokes then I need to write better jokes, in the end no harm done.  You can’t expect everyone to like what you say all the time, that’s just how it goes.  Anyway, I like riffing on stuff for fun and if someone doesn’t like that or if I’m miserable at it then all that’s ok too.  I do regret comparing it to a “bad” modern political cartoon though because, come on, it’s Gillray.  The tiny crown!  I couldn’t resist commentary.  Oh what a tangled web we weave.

Thanks for your call for courtesy though, I thought it was classy and I wanted to answer it!  I should enable that Ask Me thing I see other people posting, it’s a little weird to repost this whole thing?  Maybe it’s not.  I am clearly not a tumblr expert.

Hm! I had never heard of this magazine, Lapham’s Quarterly before, but I am looking through what they offer and it seems quite interesting. Perhaps you will agree! Click the link.

Just posted recently on Youtube is another Gwynne Dyer series on war, this one called The Defence of Canada from 1986.

As it states:

A three-part Canadian-centric successor to Gwynne Dyer’s “War” documentary series originally broadcast in 1986. This series examines Canada’s military affairs with NATO, UN, and the United States during the last decade of the Cold War.

Very interesting! I am watching the first one now as I work and it features interviews with Canadian WWI vets, a relative rarity in war docs.

Earlier today on this tumblr there were links to jokes about war (dictators in any case), so why not some education about war. I’m bookmarking this for me as much as anyone else, since I’ve only seen bits of it.

Here is a series beautifully presented on the blog Pulse Media from it’s chopped up versions on youtube, the 1983 NFB series War: A Commentary by Gwynne Dyer.  It is, unfortunately, not on the NFB site.  Pulse seems to be missing the last episode, but there are seven there still.

War was nominated for an Academy Award, and Gwynne Dyer is a noted Canadian writer and historian.  Am looking forward to watching more.  Click on the image to go to the posting.

Heyyy maybe you’ve seen that first picture being posted all over facebook?  I know I have!  I also know that the jokes were originally by Ben Kling, as you can see by following this link!  There are also more where they came from!  Cute stuff.

Now jokes like “Be Mein” could be pretty coincidental but on the whole I don’t think so!  I just wanted to direct you to the original artist, because hey, fight that good proper attribution fight.  Facebook is a no mans land of nothing attributed to anyone ever.

Ben is my IRL friend and I hate the internet and I’m gonna smack all you fuckin’ joke-stealing jerks up OK? Also, you tasteless weirdo who re-purposed his jokes, I feel really sorry that you have 0 design sense and couldn’t see that his drawings were wayyyyyy cuter valentines than your crappy photoshops. AARRGHH

If you like Ben’s original cool cute valentines, you can purchase them here!! http://www.redbubble.com/people/benkling/collections/179130-dictator-valentines?product_type=greeting-card <—- yeah!!!

I’m one who made this egregious error, even after I totes remember seeing these wonderful illustration/valentines on the Tumblr. The best way to make up for it is to first publicly confront my wrongdoing, and then buy the fuck out of Ben Kling’s valentines (my valentine will have to guess which one I got ‘im).

You’re the person who made the knockoffs? First of all, thank you for responding in such a classy way (unlike I did). It takes guts to own up to doing something. I always picture the people who do these things as people who DO consider the consequences of hurting the content-creator, and they just don’t care. But I think a lot of times it’s just someone who didn’t realize, maybe didn’t think it all the way through, or maybe didn’t see someone’s creative effort as something that should belong solely to it’s maker.

True apologies are like icecream sundaes made of magic that tastes like sunsets. They are rare, and should be well received and appreciated!

(I’m sorry I called you a tasteless weirdo.)

awesome lessons, everybody!!

Well there you go!  This was very nice!  Civility all around.

Hey! Are you planning a wedding, especially in the Toronto area, and still need a photographer?  Josh Fee and Robin Gartner are two of my old friends, and they are the best in the biz.  Check out their website here.
