research and other wanderings - see my website! There are comics and a store and everything: Hark! A Vagrant

My friend Mamrie Hart and Lil Bub together is two of my favorite things!

You best be watching Mamrie’s show You Deserve A Drink, it’s got more puns than all our dads locked in a room together could come up with.

My new mini comic DEMETER is up on ComiXology as of this morning, for 99 cents! Go check it out!!!

I’ve done a few interviews about it; most recently on Pop Culture Hound where we chatted about The Mire, Demeter and Killjoys!  Also on NonCanonical, where again we chat Killjoys, self-publishing and black metal!! Good times.

ComiXology also called me up yesterday to chat for 10 minutes about the new Submit platform and the trilogy of mini comics I’ve put out through them! And I had a little chat on Broken Frontier about inspiration, mythology, and the inherent connection between the supernatural and the tragic.

If you require MORE, check out Newsarama’s 10/10 review, and 4.5/5 on Comic Book Therapy! Daniel Elkin and Keith Silva also go above and beyond the call of duty with their in-depth discussion about Demeter over at Comics Bulletin!

Oh man, Comic Bastards gives it a perfect 5/5 with a review that was so nice it made me blush! And finally, Deer In The Xenon Arc Lights writes that “[Demeter] will without a doubt have dramatic effect on those bold enough to buy it.” <3

If you enjoyed Wolves and The Mire, Demeter is the third and final in the trilogy! And if you want to own any of these books physically, you can shimmy on over to the WEREHOUSE to pick up copies!

Speaking of- I’ve been told by The Werehouse guys that has started shipping books, so those of you who pre-ordered should get them soon- sketches will be going out sporadically as I get them done so if you ordered a sketch edition, expect it in July sometime.

Phew, that’s a lot. So yeah! Killjoys, that’s out last week (if you didn’t hear), and Demeter is out this week! I made them both for you. <3

Listen - this comic is gorgeous.  Do yourselves a favor, honestly.

SPACE! The Gallery Show

Opens Friday, June 21st at 7pm at Gallery 1988: WEST in Hollywood, California.

This show is my way of perpetuating the message people like Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson have dedicated their lives to. There is also a severe lack of incredible space art, and I wanted to change that. I’m really proud of this show, and I hope you guys will have a chance to see it in person.

Fun Medieval Doodles

Here is a small selection of doodles I tweeted over the past year (@erik_kwakkel). Although they are usually not exactly eye-candy, they are easy to like. I think this is because they are often very funny, but also because the activity is such a familiar one. Almost without thinking we ourselves doodle on notepads, post-it notes or in the margin of the newspaper.

While our drawings are often the result of boredom, in the Middle Ages there was often a more pragmatic rationale behind their creation. In some cases they were a response to the text, such as the Adam and Eve doodle above. Moreover, many were the fruit of correcting the nib of the pen, like the little dog’s head. They are the medieval equivalent, as it were, of our scratching on a piece of paper to get the ink flowing.

In other cases still it remains a mystery what the doodling scribe was thinking. Why draw the skeleton that seems to hold a glass, for example? Is it a warning that our enjoying the delights of this planet will ultimately come to an end? A medieval campaign against riding your horse while under influence? Whatever the meaning of this poor guy with his drink may be, and in spite of the fact we are reminded of our own mortality, sketches like this do brighten the page - and my day.

D is for deformed

Some medieval decorators were born with a pen in their hand, others never got it right. Thumbing through the medieval book you encounter places like this: an empty page used by scribes or decorators for practicing their skills. I feel sorry for this guy, who tried to make a flowery letter D but ended up with oddly-shaped, deformed creations - including, at the bottom, a human brain. However, I also admire his zest and perseverance: an artist with pluck, albeit without skills.

Medieval smiley face

This is a true feel-good doodle, drawn by a medieval reader and found in the lower margin of a 13th-century page. The surprisingly modern-looking smiley face is wearing glasses and seems to float towards the text in a balloon, quite content. This little scene made my day.

Pic: Conches, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 7 (main text 13th century, doodle 14th or 15th century). More medieval doodles in this Tumblr.

You should all follow Erik Kwakkel’s tumblr, all of his amazing medieval posts have lovely annotations, a rare thing on tumblr where too often we see images with little context.  Superb!
