Iroquois Woman from Kahnawà:ke
I love Cornelius Krieghoff’s paintings. His portraits of Habitants make my day. So does this lady! You WEAR that top hat, lady! Hell yeah!
Edit: i’m still thinking about this woman! Where did she get the hat? It looks like she’s into it, it’s the only piece of western clothing she has, far as I can see. Like she saw it and was like “yeah I’ll take one of those.” It is probably a man’s hat because it’s around 1850 and doesn’t look like a riding hat? If someone told her it was a man’s hat, did she say, that’s stupid, you’re stupid, it’s a great hat and it’s mine so jump in a lake? Top hats for everyone.

Retrofit comics hosts some giant talent, and if you’re looking for good things to land in your lap, look no further. On top of that, if you’re interested in comics, you’ll be keeping an eye on them, if you’re savvy. Everyone wonders how to “make it” in comics, and here are some artists making it happen for themselves with a blend of the old mini-comic ways, and the new digital ones. I’ve watched Box Brown innovate both style and approach for years, and I couldn’t be more down with what’s happening here.
Speaking of which, I better get a subscription.

I don’t usually draw the people around me but I sat next to some teen girls in a cafe. Ponytails, braces, oversized shirts, leggings and boots. They were laughing and looking at pictures on an iphone. One had an album called “I Don’t Care” which apparently was just pictures of her and a boy named Kadence, but that was like, 2012, ok?
They were great.
Have you ever read Warren Ellis and Raulo Caceres' Crécy? In 2007, when I started comics, I went to a comic shop for the first time - Legends, in Victoria, BC. Warren had linked to my comic and I wanted to read something of his. I told the owner what I was interested in, and he put Crécy (and Marvel 1602) in my hand.
You can find a couple more sample pages by clicking through. It’s a rough ride, but hey, them’s the Medieval breaks.
“Madame C.J. Walker…with her niece Anjetta Breedlove, Alice Kelby and Lucy Flint, forewoman and secretary at the Madame C.J. Company.”
Madame C.J. Walker was born 146 years ago today on December 23, 1867. In 1906, Walker and her husband moved from Louisiana to Colorado, where she started making and marketing hair products for African-American women. Walker’s products included the “Wonderful Hair Grower” and the hot comb.
Walker broke many new grounds during her lifetime. She became the first woman to sell products via mail order; the first woman to have her own beauty school, and the first to have chain of beauty parlors throughout the United States, South America, and the Caribbean. In 1914, Walker’s company grossed more than a million dollars. Not only was she the first African-American millionaire, Walker also became the first self-made female millionaire. For more information on Madame C.J. Walker and her legacy, visit Digital Schomburg.

Before the Discovery Channel airs “Klondike” next week, which people are going to watch because it stars Robb Stark, I definitely suggest reading Chris Turner’s current piece in the Walrus magazine. Click to go through.
As a bonus, follow the link at the bottom of that article to read another from the excellent Charlotte Gray, from a 2010 issue.
Last night I was up late and this was on my mind, so I sketched it out. I think it was the fox picture I posted last that brought it to the front, played out again like a picture show. It’s just rough, I thought someday I’d draw it out better. But sometimes the urge to draw a thing takes over a bit - and I’m awful impatient when it comes to drawing long strips, unfortunately.
Some backstory, as some know, I worked for two years in the Tar Sands of Fort McMurray, in various mining sites. I paid my student loans off, I saved a bit, and I started cartooning as a job when I left. Not everyone’s experiences there are the same, this was just a part of my own. It’s a complicated place that I think of every day, and there are scenes that never leave my mind.
This is one night at the Syncrude site, in January 2006. Click for the whole thing, here

This elderly couple took a photo in their small garden outside their house for every season of the year, come rain, snow or shine.
They stood in the same spot for every season and showed off their beautiful little garden, which they were obviously very proud of.
I’m mesmerized by these wonderful pictures. Many emotions to be felt.
