research and other wanderings - see my website! There are comics and a store and everything: Hark! A Vagrant

I could stare at vintage wallpaper patterns for hours.  Go to Hannah’s site for more, these are some screenshots of the type of thing she posts.

Remember when you were little, and maybe you would puzzle over the repeating shapes in wallpaper?  Imagining all kinds of things.  It’s its own world.  Not that some of it couldn’t creep you out Yellow-Wallpaper style, but mostly, it’s great.

ABC’s Once Upon a Time first look at Rapunzel.

“We went a little darker and freakier,” says executive producer Edward Kitsis. “A little more horror story in the vein of [the 2004 movie] The Grudge.”

The long-locked damsel played by Alexandra Metz will be visited in her tower by Prince Charming as well as a mysterious hooded menace.

Unfortunately, it appears that Rapunzel will not be a recurring character on the show. As appears to be par for the course with characters of color on the show, from what I have read.

Hm!  I’ve never seen this show, so I’m not going to pretend to know what they’re all about or what the heck is going on in that "darker and freakier” quote (side note, so it’s going to be more like a horror story, less like the original where a human is locked in a tower for years and someone is blinded by thorns, or as we know it, Good Times Rapunzel).

But looking at the picture you immediately think, this is a cool thing, more of this!  More more!  On the off chance that you are a Hollywood Honcho reading tumblr on a Saturday night, like they probably do, this is what the people want, y'see?  Thanks for listening, Hollywood Honchos.  Try to remember fantasy characters are made up and don’t have to be white folks all the time.  Off you go now, shoo, shoo

Cheers Roleplaying Game, (a character sheet example)

I’d really like this to be a real game.

I saw this a few days ago and have been thinking of it since.  Do you follow Steve?  He is a good friend and his work has the ultimate charm.  He and his wife Leslie also are board game PROS.

Steve, make this happen!

Who can resist the voice of Jim Carter “Carson” of Downton Abbey?

Domestic Service!

Because who are any of us kidding, go back in time 100 years and it’s not likely you’re going to be Lord o’ the Manor.  Most of us would have been the maid, maybe the gardener, maybe that one guy who knows a lot about horses and shovels poop.  As much as I like kings and queens, it’s the common person’s story that really appeals, since my family tree lets me know I’m not coming from a long line of Fancy Pantses.

Charity

I linked to a charity, but then took it down. The execution was fairly heavy handed.  I linked to it because it’s a good idea to send kids to school by buying supplies, that’s neat.  I thought, if this presentation makes me uncomfortable maybe that is the point, and I should get over myself.  But it didn’t sit well, I don’t think I thought it through well enough before I put it up.  So I took it down.  I’ll probably take this one down later too because it makes no sense on its own, but just a note, in case you saw the other one.

Edit - in response, some folks have passed along other charities with similar ideas and better presentation:

Valentine’s Day In The Civil War

The sending of Valentine’s Day cards, a tradition that is thought to have begun more than 20 years before Christopher Columbus went searching for America.

This Civil War-era Valentine features a portrait of General I.B. “The Fighting Duck” Richardson, a major general in the Union Army. This war-time Valentine envelope was postmarked Washington, D.C., of course.

Herding Horses, Han Geng. 8th c. Tang Dynasty, National Palace Museum of Taiwan. Digitally retouched photograph, ink on silk.

One of the most important artists working during this period was Han Kan (sic), considered to have been the supreme painter of horses. These animals were tremendously admired in China, and they were the subject of countless stories and fables extolling them as free, proud, noble creatures. A symbol of wealth and luxury, the Emperor Ming Huang— admirer of poets, painters, and beautiful women, and a keen lover of horses— had over forty thousand thoroughbreds in his stable.

When Han Kan was called to the Court, about the middle of the 8th century, the emperor advised him to study the painting of horses under Chi’en Hung, a contemporary Court painter. Han Kan ignored the suggestion, which was the equivalent to a command. When the emperor scolded him, he replied: “I have been learning how to paint horses, and every one of the horses in the Imperial Stables has been my teacher.”

His fame increased with the passage of time so that a later critic wrote: “When Han Kan painted horses, he was truly a horse.” This was the supreme compliment, as it meant that the artist had achieved such full identification that he was able to transmit the inner spirit of the horse.”

Chinese Art, Judith and Arthur Hart Burling, 1953.
