Medallion with the Adoration of the Magi

Netherlands (c. 1450-1500)

Gold, Jewels, Enamel; 5.5 cm.

An entire story unfolds in 3D inside this concave stage setting. The scene is cast in gold. Its colouration is the result of a complex process: every colour of enamel has its own melting point and so a separate firing is required for each tint. This jewel bears a resemblance to wooden prayer nuts, but they were made only some fifty years later.

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

Those magi!!!

They COULDN’T WAIT to pop off their crowns!  One has only a foot in the door and he’s like, *shoom* goodbye crown!  One is still outside.

The wide-eyed guy at the bottom giving Baby Jesus some “Oh Tish, I love it when you speak French” action is also worth noting.

So, I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan. I was inspired by seeing Kate Beaton’s ASOIAF art yesterday (Ygritte! Beric Dondarrion!), and had a nice discussion about George R.R. Martin’s awesomely varied lady characters. I haven’t drawn any ASOIAF art lately, but I thought I’d collect my previous pieces in a handy bundle right here:

- The disturbingly nondescript Leech Lord, Roose Bolton.

-Brienne of Tarth— powerhouse lady-knight!

-An early morning in King’s Landing with Sansa.

-Jon Snow & Ghost beyond the wall!

(I’ve also drawn a Khal Drogo, but it’s not my favorite, so I’m not including it!)

It’s a bummer that we’ll probably be waiting a while for the rest of the books to come out, but you can bet this isn’t the last batch of ASOIAF art you’ll be seeing from me.

Who’s excited for the start of the second season on HBO next weekend??

Look what’s on my wall now!

If you’re not following Kali you’re missing out, I have some of her prints on the way to my house AS WE SPEAK

These are only wee postcards, get bigger prints from this show.  And from her store!

I moved into a new studio, alongside Koyama Press!  Follow them on tumblr here.  Annie was instrumental in getting me a spot, because she’s the nicest person, in the world, basically.  Now I get to see all the best comics ALL THE TIME (in the next room if I ask nicely) which is amazing.

I feel like everyone in comics knows Koyama Press because they pick up all the hottest new talents first.  Like, if you want to see the future face of comics, go there.  But they’re still small, so it’s possible that you, reader, do not know about them.

I might fix that if I were you.

Click through the picture for the spring releases I got to see before you did. Ho ho!

If you are, yourself, depressed right now, send a signal to someone, anyone you trust. Say the words out loud. Words have power. You are not a freak. You are not icky. You are, simply, human and in great pain. You do not “deserve” that pain. You are not less than for feeling it, and you DO deserve love and care and relief from that pain.

I work in Japan as an assistant language teacher, and I’ve posted my better lesson materials here on tumblr from time to time (and elsewhere too). In response to requests, I’m now making them available for other ALTs to use, via this new gumroad store.

So far I’ve only added my ‘Guess Who’-alike game, but I’ll be adding more, bit by bit, whenever I have time to prepare the PDFs. (Yes, including the Die Hard thing.)

You can pay for them or not pay for them! It’s up to you.

Of course, you don’t have to be an English teacher to download any of this stuff! If you’re just curious, help yourself.

I know more than a couple of language teachers in Japan and Korea!  Very cool of Patrick to make his education resources available.

I found this neat hand painted sign in an antique store! The Player’s Club of Toronto was, as far as I can tell, a 1920’s theatre group. It’s really great to see this kind of hand done design up close.

The Players Club was an offshoot of the Hart House theatre group at U of T.  In the ‘20’s the artistic side of productions, - sets, costumes, bills etc., were handled by a succession of Group of Seven members - Harris, MacDonald, and Lismer.   Commercial draftsmen that they were… it’s not inconceivable!
