TCAF signing times!

These are my official signing times at TCAF this weekend:

Saturday, May 10, 12:15pm-1pm, Beguiling Signing Area, Basement Level

Sunday, May 11, 1:15pm-2pm, Marriott Bloor Yorkville, in the Yorkville Room.

They aren’t very long, it’s true! I always am a little anxious at comic shows, not because of the people, who are unequivocally lovely, but because of the crowds. Heck, we are cartoonists, we work alone for hours on end. I’d rather be all composed, and the creator that people want to meet, than a ball ‘o nerves. So I plan to find some time and a place where I feel good about drawing and meeting readers for a while, more casually than the official times. I’ll tweet about it when I do, and maybe you’ll get a chance to drop by! Pretty willy nilly, but hopefully fun too.

Round about ten years ago, the internet radically altered how comics creators worked, discovered new work, and made friends with their contemporaries. “Webcomics,” once a ubiquitous term, has now splintered into a dozen different methods of digital comics, and socializing is more omnipresent than ever! We check in with six cartoonists who started making comics online at about the same time, to see where they’re at, the avenues open to cartoonists, and how the next generation might be able to follow in their footsteps. Featuring Kate Beaton (Hark A Vagrant), Meredith Gran (Octopus Pie), Tom McHenry (noncanon), Phil McAndrew (Crying In Front Of Your Dog), Jess Fink (We Can Fix It), and KC Green (Gunshow). Kate Beaton is a Canadian cartoonist who appeared in the comics scene in 2007 with her online work “Hark! A Vagrant!”. Since then, she has become a fan favorite and has gathered a significant following, with illustrations appearing in places like The New Yorker, Harper’s and Marvel’s Strange Tales anthology. Praised for their expression, intelligence and comic timing, her cartoons often display a wonderfully light touch on historical and literary topics. TCAF Announces 2014 Kick-Off Event: Lynn Johnston and Kate Beaton, In Conversation
The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is delighted to announce its official ‘Kick-off’ event for the 2014 Festival,“Lynn Johnston and Kate Beaton, In Conversation”. The event will feature two Canadian cartooning dynamos discussing their art and craft, and the changes the industry and medium has been changed over the past three decades and with the advent of new technologies. TCAF is also happy to official unveil our 3rd poster for 2014, by Lynn Johnston herself!
“Lynn Johnston and Kate Beaton, In Conversation” will take place Friday, May 9th, 2014, at Toronto Reference Library in The Bram and Bluma Appel Salon, 789 Yonge Street, 2nd floor. Did you know that there are no public monuments to Ida B. Wells? Aside from building projects named after her.

From what I gather, the Ida B. Wells monument has been in planning a long time. Click on the link to take you to the fundraising page, or see their facebook page for recent activity. Look, most of us don’t deserve a statue. Ida isn’t most of us.

I made some comics about Ida B. Wells, and then I talk about her for a while, because I am #1 teen fan and I wish I had a poster of her on my wall with hearts all over it.

An Elegy for Allen Ginsberg

I met Alistair at my cousin’s wedding, he was always very gracious, definitely nice enough to read teen writing at a mother’s request.

With the very sad news of Alistair MacLeod’s passing, take some time to read The Boat, his first short story, and one that has never left my mind.

Alistair did a great service as an author to our part of Cape Breton, he was our most talented bard.
