Harper’s Bazaar- is an American women’s fashion magazine, first published in 1867. Harper’s Bazaar is published by Hearst and, as a magazine, considers itself to be the style resource for “women who are the first to buy the best, from casual to couture.”

Aimed at members of the upper -middle and upper classes, Bazaar assembles photographers, artists, designers and writers to deliver a “sophisticated” perspective into the world of fashion, beauty and popular culture on a monthly basis.

Here is a really awesome 1720-ish book of heraldry from the Laing Collection within the Edinburgh University Special Collections! It’s a really unique item for a number of reasons, not least of which is the flypapers that are actually wallpaper scraps!

To me, however, the most interesting thing about it is how it’s a mix of print and hand work. The fourth picture is a coat of arms that for some reason was never finished, and shows how each coat in the book was embellished from this basic template. The artist’s reference is even still stuck on the page! Another highlight is the later pencil question mark next to the word “finely” in the title- I guess Laing had some opinions about the quality of the paintings!

Absolute stunning and fascinating

neat!

Detail from page 362 of Family Man, now online!

This week on the Patreon, I put up a Spotify playlist of 16 songs I associate with this comic. It’s accessible to everybody contributing at any level!

(I’ve been slowly accumulating this playlist for years and I feel like I protective dorkus about it, so the sheltered waters of Patreon felt like the perfect place to share it.)

I read this quote, from an interview with Katherine Sui Fun Cheung, and the interviewer asked about why she was a pilot and all that, and she just said “I wanted to fly, so I did.” And I thought MAN! I can’t even figure out what to eat for breakfast,...

I read this quote, from an interview with Katherine Sui Fun Cheung, and the interviewer asked about why she was a pilot and all that, and she just said “I wanted to fly, so I did.” And I thought MAN! I can’t even figure out what to eat for breakfast, never mind sailing through a load of barriers just because I think I want to give something a shot. “Flying? Whatever, I’ll just Do It, it’s 1932 or something, I don’t care.”

Another quote? “What’s the point of flying a plane if you can’t have fun doing it?”

Look at her! We all want to be her.

I love early aviatrices - Bessie Coleman, Amelia Earhart, Beryl Markham, etc - they were like “oh is there a brand new job on the face of the earth? Think I’ll invite myself to do it before anyone says I can’t.”

Not too much time goes by before Top Gun washes up once again on these shores and that is a fact.

Achilles maybe needs some counselling, like, it’s not as though I come to your house and fill it with slaughtered Trojans, why would you do that to mine? You know? Common courtesy, folks.
